Professor Mathew J Manimala

Dr Mathew J Manimala is Professor of Organisation Behaviour and Jamuna Raghavan Chair Professor of Entrepreneurship at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore. Prior to joining IIMB he served as Senior Member of Faculty, Chairman of the Human Resources Area at the Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI) and as lecturer at the University of Cochin and the University of Bhopal.
Dr Manimala obtained an MBA degree from the University of Cochin, an MBSc degree from the University of Manchester and a Doctoral degree from the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad. He has received several academic honours including a Certificate of Distinction for Outstanding Research in the Field of New Enterprise Development from the Academy of Management (USA). His doctoral thesis on the ‘Managerial Heuristics of Pioneering-Innovative Entrepreneurs’ has been widely acclaimed by the community of researchers both within and outside the country. He has been awarded research fellowships by prestigious international agencies such as the European Foundation for Management Development (at Manchester Business School, Manchester 1990-91) and the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute (at University of Calgary, Canada: 1998-99).
Dr Manimala conducts training programmes/sessions on a variety of topics in organisation behaviour such as creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship, organisation structure and design, building self-managed teams, conflict management, organisation culture, organisational learning, transformational leadership, and organisation development. He is invited by several national and international organisations including the United Nations University for conducting executive and entrepreneurship training. He has provided consultancy assistance to several large and medium-sized organisations in the areas of perspective planning, strategic re-positioning, organisational re-structuring, HRD policies and practices, HRD performance evaluation and training need assessment.
The major areas of Dr Manimala’s research are entrepreneurship, organisation culture, strategy and structure. He has published more than 50 research papers and articles in refereed national and international journals and presented papers at international conferences. One of his papers has been selected by peer-nomination as a ‘Classic of Entrepreneurship Research’. One of his major research activities at present is the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) project, of which he is the co-ordinator as well as the principal author of the report. He has published two books: Entrepreneurial Policies and Strategies: The Innovator’s Choice (Sage Publications, New Delhi); and Entrepreneurship Theory at the Cross Roads: Paradigms and Praxis (Wheeler Publishing, New Delhi). He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal, Creativity and Innovation Management published by Blackwell Publishers, Oxford, UK and the Editor of South Asian Journal of Management published by the Association of Management Development Institutions in South Asia (AMDISA).
